NOPS Utilizes Innovative Computerized Alignment System, Compas™
Nebraska Orthotics and Prosthetics is among the first clinical practices in the nation to utilize OrthoCare Innovations' Compas™ (Computerized Prosthesis Alignment System). Compas enables the prosthetist to use real-time gait analysis data to optimize prosthesis alignment for each individual.
"If an amputee does not have optimal alignment of the prosthesis, it can cause pain, possible infections, and reduced levels of mobility," said Randy Brown, CP. "We always take great care to ensure the fit of the prosthesis, but this new system will let us make modifications quickly and accurately, resulting in shorter and fewer office visits for the patient."
The Compas system is comprised of a titanium Smart Pyramid™ (sensor) embedded in the prosthesis, a Master Module for communications and power, and computer software. After the patient dons the prosthesis and takes a series of steps, the sensor communicates with software (computer or PDA) via a wireless Bluetooth® connection. The Compas software automatically extracts and interprets the relevant information and instantly provides prosthesis-specific gait analysis. The practitioner can then adjust the prosthesis for optimal alignment specific to the patient.
